07/27/08: Obadiah & Jerimiah 1
Ted: Jewish tradition has it that the prophet Obadiah (who wrote the book of the same name) is the same as the Obadiah who met Elijah (1 Kings 18:7). However, there are several Obadiahs in the Old Testament, and I do not know whether or not it can be proven that these two Obadiahs were the same person.
The prophet Obadiah foretold the destruction "in that day" (Obadiah 8), that is at the end of the age, that would happen to Edom/Esau (which refers to a region of present-day Jordan). Remember, Esau (also called Edom--Genesis 25:30) was Jacob's (Israel's) twin brother. They will act in violence against their "brother Jacob" and "rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction" and "boast so much in the day of their trouble" and "march through the gates of my people in the day of their disaster" and "look down on them in their calamity" (Obadiah 10,12,13). All of this refers to the time of the day of the Lord (Obad. 15), at the end of this age (to come in a handful of years, I suspect).
However, following all of that great destruction (that is, after Jesus the Messiah returns), Mount Zion will be holy (referring to the millennial Temple and Holy Mountain of the Lord), and Jacob (Israel) will shine brightly while Esau will be stubble (Obadiah 17,18). Only after Jesus returns will His kingdom be on the earth (Obad. 21).
God knew Jeremiah before He formed him in the womb, and He set him apart and appointed him to be a prophet to the nations before he was born (Jeremiah 1:5). I feel that this is just one of the many examples in the Bible why abortion is wrong. What if Jeremiah had been aborted? It makes me wonder how many great people, that we never knew about, have been aborted.
