07/02/09: Bible Study Sticky

I have decided to read every word of the Bible over the course of 2008.

I am lucky enough to have a good friend, Ted Montgomery, who is very well-versed in Bible study. Not only is he well-versed, but he's very articulate, intelligent, and dedicated. Also he has a phenomenal memory and can usually point out multiple passages that are relevant to any discussion.

We are going to read daily and have a discussion where he answers any questions I might have. Hopefully they will be common questions that are relevant to other readers out there. Any days that don't have a post are days I didn't have a question--which sometimes happens several days in a row.

This is such a valuable situation, I thought it would be very worthwhile to make a record of it and make that record available to anyone else who might need it.

We are using Ted's Chronological List of Bible Passages to read -- he believes it makes the story more coherent. We read one listed section per day.

Ezekiel was told how Israel would be punished, due to its detestable idol worship; and God would do something not done before and not to be done again (Ezekiel 5:1). I believe that this is a future prophecy: "A third of your people will die of the plague or perish by famine inside you; a third will fall by the sword outside your walls; and a third I will scatter to the winds and pursue with drawn sword" (5:12). Yet, a remnant will be spared (6:8). More about this can be read in three thirds and a remnant.

  • 1 Kings 18:16-46 is one of my most favorite stories in the Bible. Basically, the false god Baal, along with 450 of his prophets, were pitted against the one true God, with one prophet: Elijah. Elijah gave them every possible chance to "prove" that Baal was stronger than God. When Baal did not respond, Elijah mocked him before all of his prophets, saying, "Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened" (18:27). But Baal was silent.

However, when it became God's turn, He performed one of the most amazing miracles in the Bible. Everybody there was a witness to it (1 Kings 18:38). There was no doubt in anybody's mind who was the true God that day (11:39).
