Chapter 24:
What is the difference between Israel and Judah?
Judah, strictly speaking, refers to everyone who is of the tribe of Judah (of which David, Solomon, and eventually Jesus were descendants). Israel, strictly speaking, refers to all the other tribes who are descendants of Jacob (Israel). Technically, "Jews" are those who are of the tribe of Judah. Loosely, though, all Israelites often are referred to as "Jews."

David's throne was established over Israel and Judah (2 Samuel 3:10, 5:5, 12:8). We already are seeing a division, of sorts, between Judah and Israel, as they argue over whose king David is (19:40-43). We will see later that David's son Solomon ruled over Israel and Judah (1 Kings 1:35, 4:20,21,25).

However, beginning with Solomon's son, King Rehoboam (1 Kings 11:43), a rift developed between Israel and Judah. Rehoboam made the mistake of choosing to put a "heavy yoke" on the people; as a result, Israel (everyone but Judah) rebelled against Rehoboam (12:13-16,19). After that point, Judah and the rest of Israel had their own separate kings.

At the very end of the age, the remnants of Judah and Israel will be saved by God (Zechariah 8:13, 10:6). They also will be joined together as one, under one King (Jesus), never again to be divided into two kingdoms (Ezekiel 37:21,22). They will have one God (Jesus), and David (after he is resurrected) again will be their king/prince (37:23-27).
